3-Step Program
The Family Check-In Program is a service at Long Island University Post that offers assistance and support to families with children ages 2-to-8 who may have some questions or concerns about their family’s well-being. The program is designed to be a collaborative process in which parents and children team up with our clinicians to help identify any areas of need, build upon areas of family strength, and support any changes you might want to make.
The program consists of three sessions, which are generally conducted one week apart from another. Each visit will last approximately 2 hours. Our team is comprised of clinical psychology doctoral students receiving clinical training here at our clinic under the direct supervision of a licensed psychologist, Dr. Hilary Vidair, the Family Check-In Program Director.

Session 1
During the first visit, caregivers will meet with one or two of our Family Check-In clinicians. They will first ask you to complete some forms and then ask you some questions about your child and family.”
We only need one or both parents for our first meeting so we can optimize our time together; your child will be included in the second session. Therefore, we ask that you arrange for childcare for the first and third visit.

Session 2
The second visit includes both parent and child. Parent(s) will meet with a team of two clinicians who will observe play activity between the parent(s) and child for about 20 minutes. Afterwards, one clinician will play with the child while parent(s) review how the play session went with the other clinician. Parent(s) will then be provided some initial feedback from the first two sessions and assistance with developing goals to meet any needs that arise from the information reviewed with the clinician.

Session 3
The 3rd visit will consist of a more comprehensive feedback session that takes into account both the first and second sessions. The clinicians will provide some recommendations, discuss options that make sense for the family, and discuss resources that may be useful to help meet the family’s goals. They will then help the family to achieve these goals and troubleshoot any obstacles. We could then schedule a future time to check-in to see how the family is doing with their action plan and answer any follow-up questions at that time.”
*Fee
The fee for this service is $50. This fee covers all three sessions, the feedback you receive in the final session and the action plan that you can take home with you. Unfortunately, we do not work with any insurance companies
